THE ELLIE & ABBY SHRINE

WHAT THE HECK IS THE LAST OF US?

!! SPOILERS BELOW !!

The Last of Us is an action-adventure game franchise created by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Entertainment. The games are set in a post-apocalyptic United States where humanity has been ravaged by zombies infected with Cordyceps. By 2033 (or 2023 according to the HBO adaptation), society has collapsed and its only hope lies in a young girl named Ellie, who possesses an immunity to Cordyceps. The Last of Us Part I, originally released in 2013, follows the jaded smuggler Joel as he escorts Ellie across America, with the goal of delivering her to the Fireflies so they can potentially create a cure. Along the way, he forges a father-daughter bond with her and they survive multiple traumatic events together. After arriving at the Fireflies' HQ, Joel slaughters them and saves Ellie from death, even if that means he's just screwed any chance of creating a vaccine for Cordyceps.

The Last of Us Part II, released in 2020, continues the story several years after the events of the first game. Set primarily in Seattle, Washington, the sequel explores the cycle of violence and revenge through dual protagonists: Ellie and Abby. The game begins with Joel being brutally murdered by Abby, a soldier from a militia group called the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). This act sends Ellie on a relentless quest for vengeance across a ravaged Seattle, accompanied by her girlfriend Dina.

Unlike many post-apocalyptic media, the franchise focuses more on humankind than the zombies--begging us to ask ourselves; what would lengths would we go for our loved ones in our bleakest moments? Can we empathize with people we've been taught to hate? Media that forces the audience to confront these dilemmas have always been favourites of mine.

The Last of Us involves some gritty, thought-provoking stuff but also women being hot and going through the horrors. As you may be able to infer from the name of this shrine, I'm particularly drawn to Ellie and Abby. Even though their conflict constantly divides the fandom, I appreciate and love the ways they foil and mirror each other. No one here is strictly a villain or hero--they are both flawed human beings trying to survive in a wretched world. Ellie and Abby are my attack dog lesbians, my babygirls, my tragic and doomed foils. They constantly spin in my head like microwave meals.

(Yes, I ship them. Toxic yuri FTW).

WHO IS ELLIE?

Ellie Williams begins her journey as a sharp-tongued, resilient 14-year-old orphan born after the apocalypse. She was a child who never knew the world before it fell. What sets her apart is her inexplicable immunity to the Cordyceps infection, making her potentially humanity's last hope. Initially tasked with escorting her across the country, Joel gradually becomes the father figure she never had, ultimately choosing her life over humanity's future.

By The Last of Us Part II, 19-year-old Ellie is living in Jackson, struggling with the knowledge of Joel's lie about the Fireflies and her own survivor's guilt. After witnessing Joel's brutal murder at the hands of Abby, she embarks on a self-destructive quest for vengeance that costs her everything; her relationship with Dina, her ability to play guitar (Joel's gift to her), and pieces of her humanity. Throughout both games, her immunity, once a source of hope, becomes a burden that isolates her.

STUPID THINGS I LOVE ABOUT HER

  • Her string bean lesbian build
  • Her foster father-daughter relationship with Joel (SOBS)
  • Her silly and goofy demeanour (when she's not in killing mode)
  • Her ruthlessness
  • Her freckles and pinkish red flush
  • That's she's insane
  • Her tattoos and hands
  • The way revenge and grief completely consume her and cloud her judgement
  • WHO IS ABBY?

Abby Anderson enters The Last of Us universe in the second game as an antagonist but quickly reveals herself to be the protagonist of her own story. The daughter of the Fireflies' head surgeon--whom Joel killed to save Ellie--Abby spent years transforming herself into a weapon for revenge. Her muscular physique and combat prowess make her a formidable soldier for the WLF (Washington Liberation Front), but beneath her hardened exterior lies someone haunted by loss. After finally achieving her vengeance against Joel, she finds it brings no peace. Through her growing bond with Lev, a transgender boy from the Seraphite cult, Abby rediscovers her humanity and purpose beyond revenge.

Her parallel journey with Ellie shows how grief and rage can either consume us or transform us for the better. By the end of The Last of Us Part II, Abby has lost her friends, her community, and nearly her life, but gained something more valuable; the capacity for mercy in a world that shows little. Her story challenges players to empathize with someone they were told to hate, which embodies the game's central theme that perspective determines who we view as heroes or villains.
